Water for Gaza: A Lifeline for Thousands

🚱 Water is a basic human necessity, one that Gazans don’t have access to adequately. In Gaza, nearly 97% of the water is undrinkable due to contamination and limited infrastructure. The average Gazan survives on less than 20 liters of water per day, far below the World Health Organization’s recommended minimum of 100 liters per day.

Recent Water Crisis Statistics:

✅ Contaminated Water: Over 90% of Gaza’s water is contaminated with sewage and salt, rendering it unsafe for consumption and daily use.

✅ Infrastructure Damage: Frequent conflicts have severely damaged over 50% of Gaza’s water infrastructure, leading to widespread shortages and inefficiencies in water distribution.

✅ Health Impact: Waterborne diseases account for 26% of illnesses in Gaza, particularly affecting children who are most vulnerable to these preventable diseases.

✅ Economic Strain: Families in Gaza are forced to spend up to 33% of their income on water due to high costs and scarcity, exacerbating poverty and economic hardships.

✅ Daily Struggle: 2 million people in Gaza face daily challenges in accessing safe drinking water, affecting their quality of life and well-being.

HDF’s Response: Bringing Hope and Relief

💧 Alhamdulillah, from June 8-15, 2024, the Human Development Fund (HDF) distributed 1,568,000 liters of water across Gaza, benefiting 78,400 families and 313,600 individuals. The distribution included:

 • 574,000 liters in Central Gaza
 • 749,000 liters in North Gaza
 • 245,000 liters in South Gaza

🚰 This initiative ensured that thousands of families received the clean water they need, thanks to the generosity of our donors. By providing clean and safe water, HDF is helping to alleviate the suffering and improve the health and well-being of Gazans.

Why Water Matters

 • Health and Hygiene: Access to clean water is essential for maintaining health and hygiene. Contaminated water leads to diseases such as cholera, diarrhea, and dysentery, which can be fatal, especially for children.

 • Education: Children who are healthy and hydrated are more likely to attend school and perform better academically. Water scarcity often forces children, especially girls, to miss school to help their families collect water.

 • Economic Stability: Access to affordable and safe water reduces the financial burden on families, allowing them to allocate resources to other essential needs such as food, education, and healthcare.

 • Dignity and Well-being: Providing clean water restores dignity and improves the overall quality of life for individuals and communities, allowing them to thrive and prosper.

Sa’d ibn Ubadah reported: He said, “O Messenger of Allah, what charity is best?” The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said, “Providing water.” (Sunan Ibn Majah 3684)

What are your guidelines for distributing Zakat Donations?

The Indus Hospital provides quality care without any discrimination, free of cost through the support of your Zakat and Donations.

With the help of reputable Sharia Scholars, The Indus Hospital (TIH) has developed a criterion to ascertain if Zakat is applicable to a certain individual. Whenever a patient visits the Indus Hospital, he/she goes through the assessment with TIH’s welfare officer to determine if the patient is eligible for Zakat or not.

Once the recipient of Zakat is identified, their MR number is marked to signify that the patient’s treatment should be supported from Zakat account. The patient is requested to sign a declaration granting the Indus Hospital permission to collect Zakat on their behalf and to use that Zakat to sponsor the treatment of his/her and/or other patients or hospital requirements. Once the patient is discharged, hospital generates an internal bill and sends it to the Zakat Committee for settlement.
